Should You Buy The Sony Ericsson K850i?

The Sony Ericsson K850i Mobile Phone is the long awaited model which improved on the already successful K800i. It features a 5MP digital camera, real xenon flash and auto focus. It also has an automatic lens cover, which all sounds great. However people are reporting fairly major problems with both the camera and the keypad.

Sony Ericsson is responsible for the extremely popular Cyber-Shot range of phones. The K800i phone quickly became known as a very capable camera phone, the K810i was very similar in features, but had a slightly restyled body. The K850i actually tries to improve on the original features, by offering HSDPA and a 5 megapixel camera.

The main complaint with the K800i was that it looked like a brick, well this one has been restyled and looks much more stylish and slim. Until this phone almost every Sony Ericsson used a joystick which I hated, however now Sony Ericsson have decided to get rid of those, however they have put the navigation pad where it is difficult to use. This phone also uses some touch sensitive keys which are enough to drive everyone crazy! The keypad isn’t exactly user friendly.

It’s difficult to talk about camera phones, it’s not all about mega pixels you know! If you look at the specs on paper then the K850i is clearly superior, or a start it has 5 mega pixels and it uses Cyber-Shot technology. It also uses a xenon flash which is much better to the normal camera phone flashes.

Unlike the K800i, the lens cover is automatic, which addresses the problem people were having with the lens cover opening by itself. It still features the BestPic feature, and picture stabiliser to help you take great shots. Instead of fiddling about with different camera options to set the modes, you can use a switch on the side of the phone. If you use this phone with care you can quite easily take great pictures.

Although the camera looks amazing on paper, it’s actually one of the most complained about features of the phone. There are many disappointed people that have upgraded their phone only to find that the pictures aren’t as good as they expected. This problem could be something to do with the flash and the layout of the camera. If you put your fingers in the wrong place then you can quite easily reduce the effectiveness of the flash, which will cause a dark photo. There could be other problems other than just holding the camera wrong, it could possibly be down to software issues.

The phones display is very high resolution TFT screen which is 2.4” in size. There is also a well equipped MP3 player. Although this isn’t a Walkman phone, there is a great MP3 player and FM radio features. It’s also possible to set MP3’s as ring tones.

The K850i is the first cybershot phone which supports HSDPA, this makes it possible to download files from the Internet very quickly at near broadband speeds. Video calling is also possible with this handset, and the video calls are quite good quality.

Supports connections through Bluetooth and USB, this means it’s very easy to put your MP3’s onto the device. You can also listen to your music through a pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones. The battery life is fairly reasonable, considering the size of the screen and the fact that it’s 3G. The phone has 40MB of internal memory which can be expanded to up to 4GB using M2 or MicroSD cards.
